Trader Warns XRP Holders Based On This Recent David Schwartz’s Statement

A recent joke about his college years shared by Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz was quickly interpreted as a signal by members of the XRP community.

In response to an X user, Schwartz mentioned a line from his university days: “My standard pickup line in college was, ‘I’m studying electrical engineering. Can I remove your shorts?’ It never worked.” The electrical engineering play on the word “shorts” immediately caught the attention of XRP holders.

Crypto commentator ILLY (@Illyriannft) shared the post alongside a pointed advisory for traders. “Remove your shorts on XRP,” he stated, appending a cautionary note. He linked Schwartz’s humorous anecdote to prevailing market sentiment surrounding XRP, advising traders that a warning had been issued.

Schwartz’s Joke

Within electrical engineering, a “short” denotes a short circuit, whereas in financial markets, it signifies a wager against a price increase. Schwartz’s quip connected both definitions. This marks another instance where the community has viewed a joke about shorts through a financial lens, latching onto that financial connotation almost immediately.

XRP Short Positions in Focus

This focus on short positions arrives within a specific context. Figures from Hyperliquid released in August indicated that 16 out of the top 20 XRP traders by position size maintained short positions. The majority initiated these between $1.22 and $1.52, leveraging 20x cross margin.

Prior to the publication of those metrics, XRP had already climbed more than 50% in less than three days, placing many of those traders in a position of unrealized losses. ILLY’s commentary arrives against that backdrop, directing his words at traders maintaining short positions on XRP and framing Schwartz’s remarks as a relevant cue to rethink their positions.

The XRP Army’s Response

Reactions to the post leaned heavily toward optimism. One participant suggested that an “only up season” was approaching sooner rather than later. Another pointed to a $220 target for XRP, tying it directly to Schwartz’s remarks. A third drew parallels to a historical silver market occurrence in December, pointing out that a bank shorting silver faced liquidation following a sudden price surge within a brief timeframe.

Conversely, one participant rejected the perspective altogether. This variety of reactions demonstrates a division within the community. While bullish traders interpret Schwartz’s message as validation, skeptics remain unconvinced.

Schwartz’s Influence On the XRP Market

Although Schwartz transitioned away from his role as Ripple’s CTO earlier this year, his social media activity continues to hold considerable influence within the XRP ecosystem. Even a casual remark sparks deep analysis, discussion, and occasionally, direct trading actions. Whether this particular joke triggers any tangible movement in the XRP market is yet to be determined.
