Throughout much of its history, API3 has been known within the crypto space for a single purpose: transferring real-world data onto blockchains while eliminating intermediaries. The project’s latest product directs that same technology toward a customer base that barely existed a year ago—autonomous AI agents beginning to handle their own transactions—positioning itself as what the team describes as the data layer for the agentic internet.
That offering is AirnodeHub, an early-access marketplace where an autonomous agent can discover, call, pay for, and verify an API response without any human intervention. This setup is a natural continuation of the philosophy API3 has championed since entering the oracle market: that data holds the highest trustworthiness when signed directly by its original source.
Crypto enthusiasts will recognize the background. API3 pioneered the concept of the first-party oracle to define data creators who manage their own nodes instead of passing information through third-party relayers, currently running more than 100 such feeds across multiple networks. AirnodeHub is built upon this exact design philosophy. Every entry is a live endpoint that defines itself, sets its own per-request pricing, and cryptographically signs each response it delivers. Because the signature remains attached to the data, a query executed by an agent remains verifiable the following day. Furthermore, because these signatures compose, an agent combining several sources can pass along each signature, allowing the final consumer to audit every underlying provider.
These mechanics are tailored to the behavior of agents. Instead of needing to know a specific provider in advance, an agent can articulate an intent in plain language and receive potential calls equipped with filled-in parameters, execution costs, and the identity of the signing entity. Agents utilizing the Model Context Protocol can integrate directly with the marketplace, treating the entire catalog as callable tools. Settlements run on x402, an open standard for HTTP-based per-request payments, enabling an agent to pay strictly for what it uses via a cryptocurrency wallet rather than relying on accounts or standard API keys. At launch, the catalog includes roughly three dozen listings covering market data, web and news search, weather, aviation, health, and sports, with each clearly marked to indicate whether it is operated directly by the original producer.
This initiative also aligns with a broader strategy by API3 to transform oracle economics. Its Oracle Extractable Value mechanism addresses a longstanding vulnerability in decentralized finance: when an oracle updates prices, the resulting liquidations and arbitrage opportunities are typically captured by external bots, stripping value away from the protocol utilizing the feed. API3 auctions off the rights to that value, routing the proceeds back to the originating applications, with prominent lending markets among early adopters. The conceptual link between OEV and AirnodeHub remains consistent—returning economic value to its creators and ensuring data is provably tied to its source, whether feeding a lending protocol or an autonomous agent.
None of this is currently presented as a finished product. AirnodeHub is in early access; listings are free to call for now, and API3 is currently building and hosting the integrations directly while working toward a future where providers can run their own nodes and sign responses independently. The API3 DAO, which oversees the project, recently approved a funding allocation that backs both the new marketplace and ongoing oracle operations.
The core bet is that data provenance will evolve into a fundamental requirement for the agent economy rather than an afterthought—and that achieving this requires empowering and paying the data source directly instead of relying on intermediaries. Whether AirnodeHub becomes the prevailing standard remains to be determined, but the architecture is currently live and available for testing. About API3
API3 is a decentralized oracle project that connects real-world data directly to blockchains and, increasingly, to AI agents through first-party, cryptographically signed data. It pioneered the first-party oracle model — in which data providers operate their own oracle nodes rather than relying on third-party intermediaries — and maintains more than 100 data feeds across dozens of networks. Through its Oracle Extractable Value (OEV) mechanism, API3 returns value generated by oracle updates to the applications that create it. Its latest initiative, AirnodeHub, extends the same source-signed data model to the emerging agent economy. API3 is governed by the API3 DAO. Learn more at api3.org and airnodehub.api3.org.
