For years, cryptocurrency investors have struggled with a persistent issue: when they pass away, their digital holdings can become entirely irretrievable, leaving families helpless while the funds are permanently locked away. To address this, Uphold has integrated a direct remedy directly into its system.
The firm revealed the rollout of an inheritance tool within Vault, its self-custody solution. Individuals holding XRP, Bitcoin, and HBAR are now able to name a beneficiary who will automatically inherit their funds upon their passing.
How Vault Works
Vault bridges the gap between platform ease-of-use and self-custody. Uphold CEO Simon McLoughlin characterizes the service as delivering “all of the benefits of self-custody to mainstream users.” Because the product grants individuals complete command over their private keys, outside entities are prevented from restricting access to the money.
Additionally, Vault provides a key recovery option. Should a customer misplace their private key, Uphold assists in restoring access, mitigating one of the primary weaknesses associated with standard self-custody methods. Conventional hardware wallets and traditional seed phrase storage lack any comparable backup mechanism.
McLoughlin defines Vault as “the most secure and convenient way to hold your assets on Uphold.” The new inheritance capability expands directly upon that framework.

Passing Crypto to a Beneficiary
The inheritance tool enables account holders to designate a specific individual. Following the owner’s death, the chosen party receives the assets securely and automatically, eliminating the need for legal intermediaries or manual transfers at the time of the event.
This development is particularly notable for XRP investors, given Uphold’s ongoing backing of the asset. The update introduces a much-needed utility to an ecosystem that lacks established planning frameworks for conventional financial tools, where financial advisors and lawyers frequently lack familiarity with digital asset management. Uphold’s function resolves this issue by managing the transfer directly through the platform.
Owners of Bitcoin and HBAR receive the identical advantage. Historically, passing down Bitcoin demanded meticulous technical preparation, such as handing down seed phrases or hardware wallets—mistakes during which could lead to permanent asset loss. Uphold’s Vault feature, previously previewed by the company, eliminates this danger through automation.

The Importance of This Launch
McLoughlin has identified Vault as one of the Uphold developments that brings him the greatest pride, with the inheritance function marking the most substantial update to the service since its debut.
The capability confronts a genuine, largely unaddressed dilemma within retail cryptocurrency markets. While the majority of trading platforms fail to provide built-in inheritance options—leading experts to typically recommend establishing a trust—Uphold’s strategy maintains the entire process inside its native infrastructure. Consequently, participants are not required to establish outside legal frameworks or move funds to alternative custody platforms.
