Cryptocurrency researcher SMQKE recently shared an obscure clip on X featuring Matthew Mellon—a banking heir and former global ambassador for Ripple Labs—explaining how XRP allowed him to manage financially throughout the 2015 Greek banking crisis. Mellon shared this experience live on Fox Business shortly after appearing on the cover of Forbes.
During the summer of 2015, the financial infrastructure in Greece collapsed in real-time. Financial institutions closed their doors, ATMs across Athens ran out of euros, and capital restrictions completely blocked money transfers for millions, heavily impacting tourists visiting the Greek islands as well.
Cards Refused, ATMs Empty
Mellon was vacationing alongside his family in Mykonos when the crisis hit the local area. When he attempted to settle a restaurant bill with his credit card, it was rejected. He then visited multiple ATMs, only to find every single machine was completely out of euros.
Upon asking if the establishment would take Bitcoin, he was informed they only accepted XRP, the digital currency developed by Chris Larsen of Ripple Labs.
“Thanks to XRP, Ripple Labs, I was able to pay my restaurant, my taxi and my hotel bill,” Mellon stated during the broadcast.

Mobile Wallets vs. Banks
When the host asked what this event implied for the broader financial system, Mellon offered a direct perspective.
“It’s turning into like the mobile wallets versus banks,” he noted. “You control your own money. You don’t need a bank.”
Prompted by the anchor about whether similar events could happen again if financial institutions became insolvent, Mellon concurred immediately.
He also noted that the atmosphere on the island grew increasingly tense, particularly at the airport as travelers scrambled to depart. “It was quite terrifying,” he remarked. “Even at the airport was turning into a mob scene just to get off the island.” He expressed deep sympathy for local Greek citizens enduring the economic breakdown, adding, “My heart really goes out to the people.”
A Clip Resurfacing Now
This footage predates widespread mainstream familiarity with XRP by years, stemming from a period when the token remained largely anonymous outside of early adopter communities. SMQKE pointed out that very few individuals had viewed the recording previously.
The segment remains one of the earliest recorded instances of XRP acting as a practical financial tool amidst an active economic emergency, captured on live television by a well-known public figure.
